<Description>

l read a story about flightless birds. They did not wish to fly anymore if they did not have to, and they lived on islands without predators until human activities left them mostly extinct. The origins of this work lay in imagining these now-vanished flightless birds. Perhaps they might have survived if their footsteps were erased?

No Bird is a kinetic installation consisting of one mechanical device that leaves bird tracks over sand and another that follows behind, erasing those tracks. The preceding machine plants its feet like a bird to leave marks on the sand. The machine behind it has a toothbrush that scratches out the tracks, along with a thin wire rake that smooths the sand over. Finally, soft bristles flatten the surface to complete the tracks’ erasure.

The repetitive cycle of these two machines—endlessly leaving and erasing—reveals a state in which action is continuously produced yet exhausted without leading to any change or direction. In this system, there is neither progress nor accumulation; only "normal operation" is maintained. This serves as a metaphor for the conditions of a post-automation society, where humans remain alive but exist as beings unable to intervene in the world.

<작품설명>

날지 않는 새에 관한 이야기를 읽었다. 날지 않아도 된다면 더 이상 날고 싶지 않다던 새들은 천적이 없는 섬에서 살다가 인간의 출현으로 인해 대부분 멸종했다. 이 작품은 그렇게 사라진 날지 않는 새에 관한 상상에서 시작되었다. 그들의 발자국을 지웠다면 죽지 않고 살아 남았을까.

<새는 없다>는 모래 위를 걸으며 새의 발자국을 남기는 기계장치와 그 흔적을 지우면서 뒤따라가는 기계장치가 결합된 키네틱 설치 작품이다. 앞서 걷는 기계는 새처럼 발을 내딛고 모래 위에 자국을 남긴다. 뒤따라오는 또 다른 기계는 칫솔로 그 자국을 흐트러뜨리고 얇은 철사로 만든 갈퀴가 모래를 고르며 지나간다. 마지막으로 부드러운 미세모가 모래의 표면을 평평하게 다지며 새의 흔적을 지운다.

끝없이 흔적을 남기고 지우는 두 기계의 반복적 순환은 행위가 끊임없이 생산되지만 어떤 변화나 방향성으로도 이어지지 못한 채 소진되는 상태를 드러낸다. 이 시스템에는 진보도 축적도 없으며, 오직 정상 작동만이 유지된다. 이는 자동화 이후의 사회에서 인간이 살아 있으나 세계에 개입하지 못하는 존재로 남게 되는 조건을 은유적으로 보여준다.

<Description>
What would animals tell human beings after they have died with their bellies full of the plastic garbage that we have thrown away? How much beauty must we lose before we can live in harmony with nature?

PET band is a mechanical device that records and plays back sounds on pieces of discarded plastic waste. Applying the principles of Thomas Edison’s tin foil phonograph, the work uses PET waste to record the voices of different people speaking about matters of human/nature coexistence, including topics of environmental pollution, plastic trash, and climate change. It consists of four plastic waste playback devices modeled on animals. The different voices recorded on the PET waste are played back automatically and simultaneously.
The recordings include a news report on glaciers melting due to global warming, the story of a sperm whale that died after eating 22 kg of plastic waste, information about mutations in animals as a result of the Chernobyl radiation leak, and a briefing by the Minister of Environment on new environmental policies. Meanwhile, the viewer hears the overlapping sounds of a voice reciting poetry, the twittering of birds, and a trumpet performance of “La Cucaracha.”

인간이 버린 플라스틱 쓰레기를 삼키고 뱃속에 각종 쓰레기가 가득한 채로 죽은 동물들은 인간에게 무슨 이야기를 들려주고 싶을까. 우리는 얼마나 많은 아름다움을 잃어버려야 자연과 조화로운 삶을 살 수 있을까.

<PET band>는 버려진 플라스틱 쓰레기 위에 소리를 녹음하여 재생하는 기계장치이다. 에디슨의 틴 포일 실린더 축음기(Tin Foil Phonograph)를 응용하여 환경오염, 플라스틱 쓰레기, 기후변화 등 인간과 자연의 공존에 대해 이야기하는 각계각층 사람들의 다양한 목소리를 PET 플라스틱 쓰레기 위에 기록한 작품이다. 동물 형상을 한 4대의 플라스틱 쓰레기 재생장치로 구성되어 있으며 PET 플라스틱 쓰레기 위에 녹음된 각각의 소리들이 동시에 자동 재생된다.

지구온난화로 인해 녹아 내리는 빙하에 관한 뉴스, 22kg의 플라스틱 쓰레기를 먹고 죽은 향유고래 이야기, 체르노빌 방사능 유출로 인한 돌연변이 동물의 출현, 환경부 장관의 새로운 환경정책에 대한 브리핑 등이 흘러나오는 동시에 시를 낭송하는 소리, 새가 지저귀는 소리, 라 쿠카라차(La Cucaracha) 트럼펫 연주소리 등이 서로 오버랩 된다.

Machine with Tree

 Machine with Tree is a kinetic sculpture combining dead trees with metal machinery. It is designed to use the object’s center of gravity to achieve a movement where the tree appears to float in midair. In Machine with Tree, a dead tree is placed at the end of a long, sharp rod on the machine. The tree slowly moves back and forth with the machine’s movements, as though floating in midair. Through its creation of artificial, bizarre movements controlled by machinery, it illustrates a melancholy contemplation of the strange and contradictory things woven together by our reality.

Since 2015, UJOO+LIMHEEYOUNG has been involved in projects using everyday objects to create mechanical devices with odd and unfamiliar movements. Through these projects, they have developed mechanical devices that evoke feelings of discomfort and awkwardness – turning trees in midair, grinding and flinging rubber tubes, twisting hair, and so forth. UJOO+LIMHEEYOUNG focuses on the emergent, unfamiliar movements that result from the combination of machinery with ordinary, everyday objects such as chunks of cement, hair, dead trees, red fluid, and silicone rubber. 

<Machine with Tree>는 죽은 나무와 금속 기계가 결합된 키네틱 조각으로 사물의 무게중심을 이용하여 공중에 부유하는 듯한 나무의 움직임을 구현하도록 고안된 기계장치이다. 죽은 나무가 기계의 뾰족한 긴 막대 끝에 올려져 있고 나무는 기계의 움직임에 따라 공중에 떠다니듯 이리저리 천천히 움직인다. 기계에 의해 제어되는 인위적이고 어색한 움직임을 만들어 냄으로써 현실이 엮어내는 기이하고 모순적인 것들에 대한 음울한 사유를 보여준다.

우주+림희영은 2015년부터 일상의 사물을 이용하여 어딘가 이상하고 익숙하지 않은 움직임을 가진 기계장치를 만드는 프로젝트를 진행해왔다. 이 프로젝트를 통해 공중에서 나무를 회전시키거나 고무를 비비거나 튕기고 머리카락을 꼬이게 하는 등 다소 불편하고 어색한 느낌들을 자아내는 움직임을 가진 기계장치들을 만들어 왔다. 시멘트덩어리, 머리카락, 죽은 나무, 붉은 액체, 실리콘 고무 등 일상의 평범한 사물과 기계의 결합으로 인해 발생하는 우발적이고 낯선 움직임에 주목한다.

<새>는 머리카락이 엉켜 있는 모터(motor)와 플라스틱 쓰레기가 결합된 채 벽에 부딪치면서 움직인다. 머리카락 뭉치가 엉켜있는 모터가 회전하면서 플라스틱 쓰레기에 부딪치는데 마치 새의 날개가 푸드득 하는 듯한 소리를 낸다.

<붉은 분수>는 붉은 액체가 동력이 되어 액체의 흐름에 따라 금속 부품이 끊임없이 회전하도록 고안된 장치이다. 가느다란 파이프의 좁은 구멍에서 흘러나오는 붉은 액체의 힘으로 금속바퀴를 움직인다. 붉은 액체가 흐르는 분수를 통해 현실이 엮어내는 기이하고 모순적인 것들에 대한 음울한 사유를 보여준다.

<Machine with pink>는 유연한 분홍색 실리콘 고무와 금속기계가 결합된 키네틱 조각으로 고무 재질 특유의 마찰력을 이용하여 실리콘 고무의 유동적이고 부드러운 움직임을 구현하도록 고안된 기계장치이다. 우리는 2015년부터 일상의 사물과 기계의 결합을 통해 낯설고 익숙하지 않은 움직임을 가진 기계장치를 만드는 프로젝트를 진행하였고 그로 인해 발생하는 우발적이고 기이한 움직임에 주목한다.

<Machine with pink>는 분홍색 실리콘 고무 덩어리들이 서로 비비고 늘어나고 튕겨지는 동작을 하는데 금속으로 만들어진 기계와 부드러운 재질의 조합으로 얻어지는 우연적인 움직임과 생소한 구조는 보는 이로 하여금 기이한 정서를 불러일으킨다. 기계에 의해 제어되는 인위적이고 어색한 움직임을 만들어 냄으로써 현실이 엮어내는 기이하고 모순적인 것들에 대한 음울한 사유를 보여준다.

It was beautiful

We wanted to talk about loss. The harsh reality instilled in people a feeling of alarm, a sense of tension or antagonism, causing us to develop despairing ideas about the society in which we live. It was like a battle with something that lacks any substance. It felt like losing something beautiful; it felt empty. We sensed how you can no longer return to the beautiful moments of the past. We wished to address the disappointment of a reality where we wish to return to a time before we developed our despairing and pessimistic views – but things do not go as we hope.

상실감에 대한 이야기를 하고 싶었다. 냉혹한 현실은 사람에 대한 경계심이나 긴장감 혹은 적대감을 가지게 하고 내가 살고 있는 사회에 대해 절망적 시각을 가지게 했다. 실체가 없는 대상과의 싸움 같았다. 뭔가 아름다운 것을 잃어버린 기분이 들었다. 공허했다. 예전의 아름다웠던 순간으로 돌아갈 수 없음을 느꼈다. 절망적이고 비관적인 시각을 갖기 전으로 돌아가고 싶지만 뜻대로 되지 않는 현실에 대한 안타까움을 이야기하고 싶었다.

Bird

One time, a bird got in through a crack in our roof. I could hear the fluttering of its wings in the cramped rooftop space. Although it was a narrow crack in the roof formed by age, the bird continued flapping its wings for several days, perhaps still believing it could fly. After a few days, I could not hear the bird’s wings any longer. Did the bird die? Or did it survive and escape? I hear the sounds of a struggle to live.

언젠가 지붕 틈 사이로 새가 들어온 적이 있다. 지붕 속 좁은 공간에서 푸드득 날갯짓 소리가 들려왔다. 지붕이 낡아 어쩌다 생긴 좁은 틈이었음에도 불구하고 여전히 날 수 있다는 생각을 하는지 며칠을 날갯짓을 했다. 며칠이 지나고 새의 날갯짓 소리는 더 이상 나지 않았다. 그 새는 죽었을까. 아니면 무사히 살아서 나갔을까. 살려고 버둥거리는 소리가 들린다.

<머리카락 끼인 기계>는 부드러운 검은 머리카락과 금속기계가 결합된 키네틱 조각으로 섬세한 머리카락 특유의 재질을 이용하여 머리카락이 기계에 끼이거나 당겨지는 움직임을 구현하도록 고안된 기계장치이다. <머리카락 끼인 기계>는 얇고 부드러운 머리카락이 끼이거나 당겨지는 동작을 반복한다. 이 작품은 불합리한 현실에서 나는 과연 행복해질 수 있을까 라는 의문에서부터 시작되었다. 기형적 현실로부터 오늒 불안과 혼란스러움을 표현하고 그럼으로써 좀더 본질적인 것을 갖춘 현실에 대한 근본적인 질문을 던진다.

<호모 캐피탈리쿠스>는 집이나 건물을 철거할 때 발생된 시멘트덩어리와 금속 기계가 결합된 키네틱 조각으로 떨어질 듯 말 듯한 시멘트덩어리의 아슬아슬한 움직임을 구현하도록 고안된 기계장치이다. 머리카락이 끼여있는 기어(gear)들이 맞물리면서 머리를 굴리듯 울퉁불퉁한 시멘트덩어리가 기계 위에서 떨어질 듯 말듯 쿵쿵거리는 소리를 내며 돌아가는데 실시간 경제 데이터의 변동에 따라 시멘트 덩어리의 회전 속도가 제어되는 방식이다.

이 작품은 불합리한 현실에서 나는 과연 행복해질 수 있을까 라는 의문에서부터 시작되었다. 기형적 현실로부터 오는 불안과 혼띾스러움을 표현하고 그럼으로써 좀더 본질적인 것을 갖춘 현실에 대한 근본적인 질문을 던진다.
