Artist Statement (2005~2012)

The work of u_joo+limheeyoung starts out of fictional stories. They tell absurd, nonsensical stories; stories about the unknowable; stories about things that go unseen in reality.
When reality begins to seem meaningless and irrational, where situations in utter opposition to any justifiable ideas or standards or contrary to reason repeat over and over, this shows a contradiction and gap with the reality that they desire.
It’s not about creating some direct record or description of the uncomfortable images witnessed in this reality so much as it is about evoking fictional characters and stories. It could be described as using imagined stories to fill the hole that arises from the gap between what u_joo+limheeyoung seek and the reality.
It’s a case of hoping that fictional stories will serve to keep balance by permitting a connection with other thoughts and other directions in a world where the axis seems skewed in one direction.
In other words, the adding of fictional stories to an uncomfortable-seeming reality is a way of reconstructing it into a new reality carrying something essential in it.
Part of this work is a timekeeping device that uses a microprocessor and action script to tell the current time. The idea here is that the flow of time is necessary for a new reality with fictional stories attached to become an actual reality.
Time is a borderline between reality and unreality; that which we call reality must possess a linear flow of reality that differs from the unreal world. So it is that this world can become a new, different reality with vivid life and motion.
