<Description>l read a story about flightless birds. They did not wish to fly anymore if they did not have to, and they lived on islands without predators until human activities left them mostly extinct. The origins of this work lay in imagining these now-vanished flightless birds. Perhaps they might have survived if their footsteps were erased?
No Bird is a kinetic installation consisting of one mechanical device that leaves bird tracks over sand and another that follows behind, erasing those tracks. The preceding machine plants its feet like a bird to leave marks on the sand. The machine behind it has a toothbrush that scratches out the tracks, along with a thin wire rake that smooths the sand over. Finally, soft bristles flatten the surface to complete the tracks’ erasure.
The work’s cyclical structure, with the endless formation and erasing of tracks, bears similarities to our human survival and its repeated patterns of remembering and forgetting, generating and extinguishing, destroying and restoring. How should we live in order to survive well? Can we become warmer presences toward the world we live in today?

<작품설명>
날지 않는 새에 관한 이야기를 읽었다. 날지 않아도 된다면 더 이상 날고 싶지 않다던 새들은 천적이 없는 섬에서 살다가 인간의 출현으로 인해 대부분 멸종했다. 이 작품은 그렇게 사라진 날지 않는 새에 관한 상상에서 시작되었다. 그들의 발자국을 지웠다면 죽지 않고 살아 남았을까.
<새는 없다>는 모래 위를 걸으며 새의 발자국을 남기는 기계장치와 그 흔적을 지우면서 뒤따라가는 기계장치가 결합된 키네틱 설치 작품이다. 앞서 걷는 기계는 새처럼 발을 내딛고 모래 위에 자국을 남긴다. 뒤따라오는 또 다른 기계는 칫솔로 그 자국을 흐트러뜨리고 얇은 철사로 만든 갈퀴가 모래를 고르며 지나간다. 마지막으로 부드러운 미세모가 모래의 표면을 평평하게 다지며 새의 흔적을 지운다.
끝없이 흔적을 남기고 지우는 작품의 순환 구조는 기억과 망각, 생성과 소멸, 파괴와 복원을 반복하는 인간의 생존 방식과 닮아 있다. 잘 살아남기 위해 우리는 어떻게 살아야 할까. 지금 우리가 살아가고 있는 이 세계에게, 인간은 조금 더 다정한 존재가 되어 줄 수 있을까.
