Ujoo+Limheeyoung(우주+림희영) is a team composed of Ujoo(born 1976) and Lim Hee Young(born 1979). Since first working together in 2004 in preparation for a design competition, they have been involved in projects that use a variety of means of visual expression -- kinetic sculpture, drawings, real-time interactive videos -- to address the theme of absurdity of reality.

The sounds of now-extinct beings emanate from a plastic fossil discovered by an intelligent lifeform from a future tens of thousands of years from now. Originating in something imagined during a documentary on the Anthropocene, Song from Plastic is a mechanical device in which sounds are recorded and played back on discarded plastic waste.
For this work, Thomas Edison’s “tin foil phonograph” approach is applied to record and play back the sounds of children’s voices, merry singing, and everyday noises on pieces of discarded plastic.
As it captures a record in plastic of different sounds—exceedingly ordinary sounds, yet ones that offer a sense of what makes human beings special—this work reflects on the meaning held by human values. What sort of traces should humans be leaving behind? If we are going to leave a record of our “humanity,” shouldn’t it be something other than plastic garbage?

작품설명
몇 만년의 시간이 흐른 뒤 미래의 지적 생명체가 발견한 플라스틱 화석으로부터 멸종된 존재의 소리가 흘러나온다. 인류세(Anthropocene)에 관한 다큐멘터리를 보며 든 상상에서 비롯한 “Song from Plastic”은 버려진 플라스틱 쓰레기 위에 소리를 녹음하여 재생하는 기계장치이다.
에디슨의 틴포일 실린더 축음기(Tin Foil Phonograph)를 응용하여 플라스틱 쓰레기 위에 아이들의 목소리, 흥겨운 노랫소리, 일상에서 들리는 소리 등을 기록하여 레코드처럼 감상하는 작품이다.
지극히 평범하지만 인간이 가진 특별함을 느낄 수 있는 다양한 소리를 플라스틱 쓰레기 위에 기록한 이 작품을 통해 인간 고유의 가치가 지닌 의미에 대해 되새겨 보고자 한다. 인간이 남기는 흔적은 무엇이어야 할까. 인간다움을 나타내는 흔적이 플라스틱 쓰레기는 아니어야 하지 않을까.
